A Changing Media: Gender and College life

In the early sixties most women finished high school and then married and became a housewife?s. Some also went to fashion or secretary school, but most ended as housewives. There was really no need for women to get an education, because as soon as they were married they would have main responsibility for the house and the kids.

However the taste of work American women got during the World War II had been satisfying. Therefor many women wanted to work, not only just as secretaries, but also as bosses and get higher paid jobs. Therefore education among young women became more common.

Portraying education is TV series can be quite difficult since going to college require a lot of work and studying. Consequently a series portraying college life would also have to show all the studying and hard work, which is not very entertaining. However some series have based their whole show on college life. We have the Greek, which show sorority and fraternity life on campus. It also shows a lot of studying, but most of the happenings are about social life.

The ?geeks? at the college are only men, and the only thing the women seem to care about is sorority life. It is just like the women have no homework, while the men work really hard and take advance classes like math and science.

We see some of the same things in Blue Mountain State. A TV series that show stupid college football guys and women very willing to take their shirt off. The series portrays college stereotypes very well: it has the very nerdy geeks with glasses that are pale and skinny, the football guys that only care about women, and women that are stupid and bitchy.

None of the shows above show that there are any smart college women and guys are either geeky or very stupid. It seems as TV series about college life portray gender very stereotypic and like to show the all equally stupid. However, the series do not show nerdy women. Women are either grey mice or sexy stupid sluts. Furthermore, neither of them is smart.

We can conclude that either women or men come out good in a TV series about college life. However, women are portrayed stupider and sluttier than men. I would say that media has a long way to go when it comes to portraying college life as something else than a very big party, with the same drama as high school.

Beverly Hills Park
